BADGERS WIN GAME OF THE WEEK
by Gary Chidester
Snow Wins Big 47-0 Against Arizona Western
For the first half of the Snow College 47-0 win over Az. Western it
looked much the same as their two previous defensive battles that went
down to the wire before the final decision. The Badgers missed two field
goal attempts, the offense stalled in the red-zone and the defense held
the Matadors to just 57 yards and led 3-0 in the first half.
The
second half saw a scoring barrage that started with an 80 yard drive that
was capped off by a Cade Cooper 1 yard quarterback sneak. Cooper came
into the game in the third quarter and drove the Badgers for the first
touchdown of the game.
The next drive covered 54 yards and ended with a 33-yard pass from Cooper
to
Travis Henderson. Colt Mund carried the two-point conversion into the
endzone for the 17-0 lead. In a decision filled with bravado Snow College
recovered an on-sides kick to start another scoring drive that was
highlighted by a 27 yard run by Mund for the score.
"The defense said they could hold them even if we didn't get the
onsides kick," said Head Coach Titan Trimble. "When the defense
has that much confidence I figured we had to go for it. We had some momentum
and I thought it was a good move."
In just one quarter of play Cooper was 7-10 passing and 156 yards. He
also
scrambled for 15 yards on the ground while directing the Badger offense.
"We made a decision to see if we could change the flow of the game,"
said
Trimble. "James Pritchard was playing well. He really was. There
were
several throws that he made that were flat out dropped."
Brett Madsen added to the third quarter scoring with an interception
that he
returned 19 yard for yet another Badger score that made it 31-0. The
defense wasn't done scoring however as they also recorded a safety for
two
points in the fourth quarter and recovered a fumble in the endzone for
yet
another touchdown.
Sandwiched between those two defensive scores, Pritchard directed a 49
yard
scoring drive that was finished off by a nine yard pass to Manti High
School
receiver Devin Frischknecht.
Snow College takes the new and improved offense on the road to Phoenix
this week to test their ability to put points on the board against the Bears.
