BADGERS 3-0 AGAINST TOUGH
GEORGIA BULLDOGS
by Gary Chidester
Close 9-7 Victory Over Georgia Military
The Snow College Badgers picked up their first win ever on the new A Turf
at Snow College Stadium and they did it with a little help from everyone.
With the 9-7 win the Badgers are now 3-0 against a tough Georgia Military
Bulldog team that never quit and late in the game looked to have the momentum
to win. Snow College's biggest margin of victory in the three wins is
six points.
Radio announcer Rick Pike suggested all the game balls go to the defense.
The defense was stellar with two interceptions by Derrick Brown and holding
the Bulldogs to just seven points. Georgia Military did gain more yards
passing than the Badgers, but the bottom line on the scoreboard was a
win.
The biggest play by the defense might be one of the most insignificant on
the stats sheet. Late in the fourth quarter and driving, the Bulldogs went
for a first down on fourth and it looked like quarterback Ferlando Williams
was going to pick up the first when Fotu Kofutua made the tackle that
prevented the first down and maybe saved the game for Snow College.
Maybe the biggest play was a substitution. Zac Manning from Morgan High
school got his chance in the third quarter and made the most of it kicking a
field goal to put the Badgers up 9-0. Snow College was 0-2 on field goals
and had the extra point blocked after the early touchdown.
You can't forget the Badger running game either with almost 200 yards of
rushing. Matt Asiata had 126 yards on 5.3 yards per carry and Ben Tonga
carried 4.2 yards per carry and a total of 71 yards.
The Badger passing game might not look overwhelming on the stats sheet, but
James Pritchard had no interceptions and connected with Ryan Neeley for 18
yards and Snow College's only touchdown. Clay Bayard was the favorite
target again with 3 catches for 21 yards.
It might not have been pretty, but it's over and the Badgers are 2-0 on the
season, they have their first win on the new turf and they start league play
this Saturday against Arizona Western.
