BADGERS ARE WSFL CHAMPIONS
by Gary Chidester
Badgers Win Last Game Of Season 26-14
It wasn't a blowout. It was a win. It was a come from behind grind it out
win against a very good team that was ready to play. The Badgers came from
behind to win 26-14 and claim their first WSFL title in ten years.
It began very inauspiciously with the Badgers fumbling their first
possession and the Bears scoring first to lead 7-0. Snow College answered
with a field goal to trail 7-3. They added a touchdown for a ray of hope to
lead 10-3, but Phoenix had their own answer to score and take a 14-3 lead.
It looked like the Bears might run away from the Badgers but a field goal
attempt was blocked and Snow College took the block and converted their own
points out of it to trail 14-0 at the half.
What a difference a half makes. The defense allowed no points in the second
half and under 70 yards of total offense in the second half. The defense
sparked the offense who had a fumble and an interception, but still managed
to score 16 second half points on two touchdowns and a Zac Manning field
goal.
The "A" Train, Matt Asiata hammered and battered the Bear defense and rushed
for over 165 and a touchdown. Cade Cooper connected 23 of 32 passes and
over 230 yards, a touchdown passing and another rushing.
The Badgers now must play the waiting game. There are many scenarios and a
few of them include the possibility of playing for the national
championship, but it will require a lot of help. Currently Snow College is
ranked 3rd nationally. They don't play this week and there is a real
possibility of dropping in the rankings, Blinn and/or Pearl River could lose
this week, or the Badgers may be heading to the Top Of The Mountains Bowl as
scheduled on December 2. Just don't strain anything trying to figure it all
out.
