The opening of the Doug Madoski era at Scottsdale Community College turned out to be a long evening for everyone involved.
First, a three-hour lightning delay that began late in the first quarter forced the game into the wee hours of Sunday morning. Second, No. 8 Snow College handed the host Artichokes a 28-7 loss in their first game of the season.
Snow running back Matt Asiata rushed for 228 yards and a touchdown, and quarterback Cade Cooper threw three touchdown passes to lead the Badgers (2-0).
Asiata's 1-yard run capped an 80-yard, 17-play drive for a 7-0 Snow lead with 7:58 to play in the first quarter. It wasn't long before the real excitement started when a monsoon storm hit the east Scottsdale area.
Seconds after the public address announcer told fans to leave the seating area of the stadium, lightning hit the SCC baseball field just east of the football stadium, causing the lights to go out. Fans, players and officials said they felt electric shocks to their feet and arms while standing on the field.
The game did not resume until 10:45 p.m. SCC tied the game early in the second quarter when freshman quarterback Joe Caskey capitalized on a Snow turnover with a 3-yard touchdown run. Snow, however, regained the lead for good when Cooper hit Adam Frandsen on a 66-yard pass for a 14-7 lead on the ensuing drive.
Cooper found Devin Frischknecht for a 3-yard touchdown pass with 6:57 to play in the third for a 28-7 Snow lead. Caskey led SCC to the Snow 27 late in the third before fumbling the ball away off a snap. He left the game early in the fourth with a strained hip flexor muscle, giving way to freshman quarterback Jeremy Roberts.
Roberts led SCC to the Snow 15 before throwing a pass that was intercepted late in the fourth.
