BADGERS SCORCH SCOTTSDALE
by Gary Chidester
Badgers Win Game Number Two
The Badgers picked up win number two on the young season but only after
battling the Artichokes, Mother Nature and an automated grounds keeper.
Snow College jumped out to a 7-0 lead after a one yard run by Matt Asiata
that capped off the first Badger possession. The drive was kept alive by a
fake punt on fourth down that Andy Davis converted into a first down.
That's when mother nature decided to make this game last into Sunday. A
lightning storm that hit the Scottsdale area forced the end of the game to
1:30a.m. Mountain Daylight Time.
After the lightning delay Scottsdale tied the score at seven, but saw little
success after that. The Artichokes did threaten once in the third quarter
after an interception by former Badger Quincy Wallin. The interception set
up a drive deep into Snow College territory, but it ended with a fumble that
was recovered by the Badgers.
Three plays after the Scottsdale score that tied the game, Cade Cooper found
Adam Frandsen on a 66 yard touchdown strike that provided all the scoring
the Badgers would need.
Snow College would add another score with time running out in the half.
Cooper found tight end Devin Frischknecht on a 21 yard passing score with 11
seconds remaining in the first half.
"Coach Coburn asked if we should kick the field goal right now," said
Offensive Coordinator Tyler Hughes. "I told him I thought we should take a
shot at the end zone. With playmakers like Cooper and Frischknecht you
gotta take opportunities."
Cooper, who threw for over 200 yards, found Frischknecht again in the third
quarter to finish off the scoring and the final score of 28-7, this time the
score came from just nine yards out.
"That's one that won't show up in the stats,"
Coach Coburn |
"That's one that won't show up in the stats," said Head Coach Steve Coburn
referring to the touchdown. "In the books it's a nine yard touchdown pass,
but in real life it's a great play that could've been a loss."
Cooper broke three tackles that would've been a sack before finding
Frischknecht all alone in the endzone.
Matt Asiata had a great start to his 2006 season with over 200 yards rushing
and player of the week honors for the offense. Asiata had a carry for 56
yards, two carries for 27 yards and two carries for 19 to highlight his
return to the starting lineup.
To put the final touches on the game, the automated sprinkling system came
on before the end of the fourth quarter forcing another short delay.
Snow College will be glad to be back home for their next two contests.
Gametime will be 1:30pm at Badger stadium.
