Badgers Finish Another Great Year

aThe Snow College Badgers finished another successful season in 2007 which featured eight weeks as the nation’s number one team in the country, their second consecutive WSFL Conference Championship and an 11-1 record.  With their great success they were able to send off multiple sophomores to four-year schools.

“It is an exciting time for us as coaches when the young men who have worked so hard for the program are able to see their work pay off in the way of a scholarship to a four year school.  Seeing them moving on to great programs while being able to complete their education is a proud moment for all of us involved in these young men’s lives,” said Badger Head Coach, Steve Coburn who is entering his third season at the helm in 2008.

In all, Snow College had six sophomores sign with Division I-Football Bowl Subdivision teams, one with Division I-Football Championship Subdivision teams and three sign with Division II teams.  “This is a great accomplishment for the program.  We didn’t have very many sophomores in 2007 but the ones that we did have were able to find great homes for the next two years of their lives,” said Coburn.

Listed below is a summary of where each player will be playing in 2008 and beyond.

ANDREW MITCHELL

Andrew is going back to his home state after his incredible story as a Badger has come to an end.  Mitchell, originally from Choctaw, Oklahoma has signed with Coach Mike Gundy’s Oklahoma State Cowboys.  Mitchell enrolled at Snow College in 2006 after serving a two-year LDS mission and his freshman season was cut short with a tear of his ACL.  Mitchell came to Snow as a tight end, switched positions in the spring of 2007 and became a 1st Team All-Conference performer for Snow College while playing in his first season as an offensive lineman.

COLEBY CLAWSON

Sanpete County native, Coleby Clawson left a full-ride scholarship at Southern Utah to walk-on at Snow College in the spring of 2006.  Clawson took no time to establish himself as one of the Badger’s top defenders and made it clear his desire to be a Badger and to eventually play Division I football.  A two-year starter, Clawson was the WSFL’s Defensive Player of the Year and signed a scholarship to play at Brigham Young University.  Clawson, who played defensive end at Snow College will be in an outside linebacker in former Badger, Bronco Mendenhall’s 3-4 defense at BYU.

  TEVITA HOLA

aCoach Mendenhall was able to add another member of the Snow College front four at BYU when Tevita Hola signed with the Cougars.  Hola committed to BYU in May of 2007 and despite a significant amount of recruiting interest, Hola remained true to his commitment.  Hola was a 1st Team All-Conference player at Snow while playing defensive tackle.  Hola was a team captain for Snow College in 2007 as he established himself as one of the top leaders in the program.

CASEY DAVIS

Another great story took place at Snow College when Casey Davis signed a letter of intent with Brent Guy’s Utah State Aggies at the conclusion of the 2007 season and that was the Casey Davis story.  Davis originally walked-on at Snow in the fall of 2006 and through his dedication became a scholarship player for Snow College after just one semester.  He eventually became a full-time starter and was a key cog in the wheel for Snow’s defense which was the nation’s best defense.

STEPHEN PAEA

In a year when Badger defensive linemen led the way in scholarship signees, Paea followed former Badger Sioeli Nau (2005-06) to Corvallis, Oregon to suit up for Coach Mike Riley’s Oregon State Beavers.  Paea was another big part of the Badger front which dominated all season long.

CHRIS ROMERO

Chris Romero was the final Badger defensive lineman to sign with a Division I school at the conclusion of the 2007 season.  Coach Hal Mumme at New Mexico State inked Romero to a letter of intent Romero looks to be a key element to the Aggies defensive future.

AARRON PO’UHA

Aarron was the second offensive lineman from Snow College to sign a four year scholarship from the 2007 team.  Po’uha, a 1st Team WSFL All-Conference performer signed with in-state school, Southern Utah.  Coach Ed Lamb signed Po’uha in the February signing class.  Aarron who is married with two young children will look to continue his education while playing for the Thunderbirds in 2008.

ADAM FRANDSEN

aFrandsen, a pre-season All-American selection in 2007 has signed with Division II Chadron State (Chadron, NE).  The Eagles, led by head coach Bill O’Boyle are one of the top Division II programs in the country as they advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division II play-offs in 2007.  Frandsen, was a 2nd Team WSFL All-Conference selection and was also a two-year starter for the Badgers.

JOSEPH SAWYER

Joseph Sawyer was the third tight end in two years to sign with a four-year school when he signed with Ryan Held’s Southwest Oklahoma State Bulldogs.  Sawyer, redshirted for Snow College in 2006 and was the team’s starting tight end in 2007.  Sawyer looks to be a starter for Held’s upstart program in the Lone Star Conference (Division II).

LEE MILLARD

Lee Millard, the final Badger to sign with a four year school will suit up for Dixie State in 2007.  Millard played along the defensive line for two years at Snow College.  Millard was one of the most dedicated Badgers on and off the field and will look to make a huge impact for Ron Haun’s Rebels in 2008.

A trio of Badger defenders, Shane Hunter, Josh Anderson and Andrew Rich will be walking on at top programs in the spring of 2008; Hunter at Boise State, Anderson at the University of Utah and Rich at Brigham Young University.  Hunter and Rich turned down scholarships at Southern Utah and Cal to attend Boise State and Brigham Young respectively as walk-ons.

The Badgers also had two other players, linebacker Josh Sharp who was a 1st Team All-American and Kimball Burton, a wide receiver and team captain decline offers at the Division I-FCS level to continue their playing careers.  Both Sharp and Burton, who have excelled in the class room as well elected to channel their efforts towards academics.
