SNOW FOOTBALL: BADGERS UPEND MATADORS 31-25
by Greg Dart
EPHRAIM - Freshman Quinn Mecham shrugged off a shaky start to throw for 271 yards and 3 Touchdowns to lead the #4 ranked Snow College Badgers to a 31-25 win over Arizona Western in Snow's league opener.
Mecham, the freshman from Timpview High School was picked off three times in the first half but came back with 2 TD passes in the second half, one a 47-yard strike to Sam Thomas (Timpanogos High School).
Other than a 78-yard TD pass from Matador Quarterback Brandon Gorsuch to Jerell McDaniel in the third quarter that cut the Snow lead to 28-18, the Badger defense was able to contain the wide-open Matador attack and limited Arizona Western (1-2) to 297 yards of total offense.
Sophomore Isi Filimoeatu from Hunter High School and Jordan Brown, the sophomore
from Brigham City and Box Elder High School led the stingy Badger defense with seven tackles each, including four tackles for loss.
With the victory Snow College moves to 4-0 on the season and should move up to at least #3 in the national rankings given #2 Mississippi Gulf Coast was beaten Thursday night.
Snow now goes on the road to face #9 Glendale Community College next Saturday night at 8 PM MST.
