Badgers 2-1 On The Season

EPHRAIM — The No. 13-ranked Snow College Badgers bounced back from last week's home loss to beat the No. 12-ranked Georgia Military Bulldogs 32-6 at home in a top-15 junior college showdown Saturday.

"This game was like USC playing Ohio State at our level right now," Snow head coach Steve Coburn said. "Back in 2002, we wanted to start being a top-10 team. We knew the team to help us get over that hurdle would be Georgia Military because they were a well-respected team and always finished in the top 10."

Snow College's defense proved to be the difference in beating the Bulldogs, as they only allowed six points compared to last week, when they gave up 35. The Badgers' defense also had seven sacks on the game, only allowed 81 rushing yards, and forced a safety in the third quarter.

"All teams try to win with a defensive philosophy," Coburn said. "A strong defense is what Snow College has been known for and so they've got to live up to that mantle and they did that today."

The offense also bounced back by putting up 32 points. Sophomore quarterback Quinn Mecham (Timpview High School) led the way by going 12-of-20 and passing for 218 yards and two touchdowns. Redshirt sophomore wide receiver Mazi Ogbanna caught nine passes going for 131 yards and one touchdown.

"We have three really special receivers in Dejay (Lester), Mazi, and Jeremy (Sondrup)," Coburn stated. "We haven't had talent like that in a long time."

Snow struck first in the first quarter with a 75-yard touchdown pass to sophomore tight end Jeremy Sondrup. Snow would never lose that lead and went into halftime up 17-0.

With just under six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and Snow leading 25-6, Georgia Military had the ball on Snow's 2-yard line. That's when freshmen defensive back Ryan Comer (Lone Peak High School) intercepted the ball in the end zone by tapping it to himself and running it back to the 45-yard line. Snow capped off that drive with a two-yard touchdown run from sophomore running back Tyson Church (North Sanpete High School), who ran for 80 yards and two touchdowns in the game.

"We had a pretty comfortable lead," Coburn recalled. "That, however, was a big defensive play to just end all possibilities of a comeback."

Snow will not get to rest long, however. Next week the Badgers will play a conference game against the New Mexico Military Broncos.

"This was a big win that could help us carry forth for the rest of the season," said sophomore defensive back Daniel Dodd. "But we'll enjoy this game now, but come next week our focus will be on New Mexico Military."

Game Notes: Offensive linemen Devin Tavana and Mikel Overgaard dressed, but did not play as they were nursing ankle injuries. They are listed as day-to-day. This also was the second of four games when Snow will play ranked teams
