SNOW TOPS SCOTTSDALE
IN SEASON OPENER by Greg Dart Badgers top team in country to win first game SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.- The Snow College football team started its season with a hard fought road win taking down the Scottsdale Community College Artichokes 37-28 Saturday. Snow scored 21 unanswered points spanning the third and fourth quarters to gain a lead they would not relinquish. That stretch was all the more remarkable because Snow dealt with a phantom fifth down Scottsdale was given in a goal-to-go situation. The preseason No. 4 ranked Badgers were the top ranked team to win during the season’s first weekend, as the preseason No. 1, 2 and 3 teams all dropped their openers. “We know when we come down here, it’s going to be a tough battle,” said Snow College head coach Steve Coburn. “It was great to see our team pull together to play like they did. We really fought hard for this win.” Sophomore quarterback Quinn Mecham (Timpview High School) completed 15 of 28 passes for 275 yards and five touchdowns for the Badgers. Wide receiver Dontrae Williams (Cyprus High School) pulled in three catches for 50 yards and two touchdowns. Mecham’s poise was big for the Badgers, said Coburn. “Quinn is mature,” he said. “He is the leader or the team and the team knows they can turn to him.” Sophomore preseason all-American running back Tyson Church (North Sanpete High School) racked up 107 yards on the ground and 64 through the air for 171 all-purpose yards and a receiving touchdown in the game. Overall, the Badgers racked up 445 yards in the game. Sophomore linebacker Chad Wilson (Layton High School) led the Badger defense, recording three sacks in the game, matching his total against the same team last season Snow hosts No. 24 Arizona Western at Badger Stadium Saturday at 3 p.m. That game is part of a doubleheader with Dixie High School and Uintah High School taking the field at 10 a.m. All games are broadcast on KMTI Radio and can be heard at www.snowbadgers.com.
