AS NEW MEN’S BASKETBALL COACH

We Are Excited About His Enthusiasm

Snow College has announced Michael Ostlund as its new men’s basketball coach. Ostlund takes over for Roger Reid who left to coach Southern Utah University after two seasons at the Badger helm.

Ostlund brings 11 years of experience as a collegiate basketball coach to Snow College and 14 years total in coaching.

“We are excited about his enthusiasm and his ability to recruit the state of Utah. He brings a great deal to our program. Also, we are excited that he will be a great member and asset to the campus and community,” said Athletic Director, Gary McKenzie.

Coach Ostlund said that he is looking forward to recruit for Snow College and added that he felt so fortunate to coach at Snow College as well as being able to continue to coach in what he feels is the best conference in junior college basketball, the Scenic West Athletic Conference.

“Snow has had great tradition and success over the years and I am looking forward to the challenge of taking this program to the next level. I know the community supports the basketball program and this community is one that I am looking forward to being a part of as is my wife, Jennifer, and my three daughters,” said Ostlund.

Ostlund, originally from Tacoma, Washington, has spent the past five seasons as the top assistant coach at Salt Lake Community College. Ostlund’s primary responsibilities at Salt Lake included working with the team’s perimeter players. Salt Lake’s guards have featured multiple players who have led the conference in assist/turnover ratio as well as being great defenders.

In five seasons with the Bruins, Ostlund contributed towards a 116-44 overall record (.730 winning percentage) and five consecutive twenty win seasons. In addition, Salt Lake never failed to reach the semifinals of the Region 18 tournament during Ostlund’s tenure.

An All-American at Salt Lake Community College occurred each year while Ostlund was at the school. Ostlund has prided himself on player development. He feels the success of the players on and off the court is the most rewarding aspect of coaching.

During his career, Ostlund has been successful in attaining recruiting contacts throughout the United States as well as internationally. In fact, during his last season at Salt Lake, the Bruins had players from Serbia, the Ivory Coast and the Senegal.

Prior to his time at Salt Lake Community College, Coach Ostlund was an assistant coach at Saint Martin’s College in Lacey, Washington. Ostlund spent five years at Saint Martin’s. He was also an assistant at Bonneville High School in Ogden, Utah for three seasons which was preceded by his first coaching position; an assistant at Weber State University.

As a player, Ostlund suited up for the Weber State. Ostlund was selected as his team’s Most Valuable Player. His playing career spanned from 1988-91 while with the Wildcats.

Ostlund graduated from Weber State with a degree in Integrated Studies and completed his master’s in Business Administration while serving as an assistant at Saint Martin’s College.

Ostlund, and his wife Jennifer, have three daughters, Nettie, Jadie, and Mattie.
