A
VETERAN SNOW SQUAD TAKES THE FIELD FOR SPRING FOOTBALL
Scrimmages and
Spring Game Open to the Public
EPHRAIM, Utah—April 7, 2005—Snow College today announced the
spring football schedule. Practices began Monday, April 4 and culminate
with the annual spring game Saturday, April 23 at 1:00 p.m. Scrimmages
are scheduled for Saturday, April 9 at 12:00 p.m. and Friday, April 15
at 12:45 p.m. Practices will be held weekdays from 12:45 to 2:15 p.m.
The public is welcome in Badger Stadium to view any practice, scrimmage
and particularly the spring game. There is no admission cost.
An experienced team suits up for Titan Trimble, named Badger head coach
in January. Thirty-four sophomores will return this season – 30
of them lettermen.
The offense will rely on experience at quarterback, wide receiver and
offensive line. James Pritchard is the returning starter at quarterback
and will be pushed by Cade Cooper, a freshman.
“Pritchard and Cooper have demonstrated a solid understanding of
the offense this first week of spring practice,” said Trimble. “With
knowledge of our offense comes confidence. I’ve particularly seen
confidence and leadership out of Pritchard. He’s taking charge of
the huddle and becoming a leader.”
Like most seasons, Snow’s receiving corps is deep and this season
features depth and experience. James Brady, Alex Furness, Jake Little
and Trevor Fronk lettered in 2004 and return in 2005. Travis Henderson,
out with an injury for spring, will join them in the fall.
The offensive line, young and inexperienced last season, became a strength
by the end of the year. Victory Haines and Cody Medler, starters in 2004,
will be counted on to anchor the offensive line. James Farrelly, a starter
on the 2003 team, joins them.
Defensively, the Badgers lost a lot of starters. Last season’s defensive
leaders, CJ Ah You, Derek Beardall, Jeremy Cowart and DJ Wade will all
play at Division I schools this year. Quincy Wallin, an all League cornerback
in 2004, has left the team and will not return.
Fortunately, several lettermen return. Cole Cooper, Fotu Kofutua, Malele
Mafua and Micah Cloward – the current starting front four for Snow,
all lettered last season. Tyler Lee, a former all State lineman at North
Sanpete, transferred from Dixie and is pushing Kofutua at the defensive
tackle position.
Brett Madsen, another all State player from North Sanpete, returns for
his sophomore season. Madsen leads a deep group at linebacker that includes
Cliff Gardiner, Mark Bricker, Steve Cook and Lennox Thompson.
“Right now, we are two deep at linebacker,” exclaims Trimble.
“Coach Coburn can replace the first three with the second three
and nothing seems to change. They fly to the ball and hit but not without
showing terrific discipline.”
The secondary features experience at both safety positions. Chase Palmer
started last season at free safety and returns. Cole Hall, injured for
much of last season, returns behind Palmer and Ryan Jensen will start
at strong safety – all three lettered in 2004.
Cornerback is the big question mark of the spring. With Wallin’s
departure, Justin DeCol, Snow’s secondary coach, is looking at Luis
Alvarez and Aramis Peoples at one corner and Tico Pringle and Derrick
Brown at the other.
Snow’s special teams was perhaps the best unit in 2004. Coach Trimble
plans to continue that momentum in 2005. Every practice begins with special
teams work and every coach has a special teams assignment. In addition,
every first-string and second-string player has a special teams assignment.
“We’ll travel 52 players next season and we intend to play
all 52,” said Trimble. “Several of those 52 will be counted
on to make our special teams even better than it was in 2004.”
One player who may impact special teams the most is Adrian Vera –
a transfer from Texas Southern. Vera is a punter and kicker who can be
seen booming punts and striking long field goals in Badger Stadium this
spring.
Snow opens the 2005 season on Saturday, September 2 at Air Force. The
Badgers host Georgia Military the following weekend – Saturday,
September 9 at 1:30 p.m.
