DEFENSE SHINES
IN FIRST SPRING SCRIMMAGE
Badgers Get in
over 100 Plays in Saturday Scrimmage
EPHRAIM, Utah—April 11, 2005—Snow’s
defense took center stage during the first scrimmage of spring football
Saturday, April 9 in Badger Stadium. The most important part of the scrimmage
was nine series staged in the red zone – the area within 20 yards
of the end zone. The Badger defense gave up only one touchdown during
that critical period of the scrimmage.
“I have three main objectives for the offense and defense. One of
them is for both units to realize the importance of the red zone and to
execute in a red zone situation,” said Titan Trimble, Badger head
coach. “Today, the defense excelled at turning back an offensive
threat.”
Besides excelling in the red zone, Trimble and the coaching staff are
asking the players to focus on first down and third down execution. Offensively,
the Badgers aim to gain five or six yards every first down. On third down,
the focus is on getting a first down.
“It’s about moving the chains on third down,” remarks
Trimble. “That may seem like a no-brainer but too often you see
teams who come up short or go for too big of a play on third down. We
want our players mentally prepared to make plays on first down, third
down and in the red zone.”
Saturday, it was the defense accomplishing their goals to turn back red
zone threats, allow very little yardage on first downs and prevent third
down conversions. Tyler Lee, a defensive tackle from Mt. Pleasant, had
multiple sacks and tackles for a loss. Chase Palmer had two interceptions
from his safety position and Tico Pringle had one while playing cornerback.
Trimble also praised Clifford Gardiner, a sophomore who currently starts
at middle linebacker.
“Gardiner played behind two of the best linebackers in our league
last season – DJ Wade and Cy Tidwell. He’s a playmaker who
is demonstrating strong leadership.”
The offense wasn’t without some success. Early on, Alex Richards
took a slant pass 93 yards for a touchdown and Asi Tuakoi, a running back,
had several long runs. Trimble praised both the first and second team
offenses for their third down conversions.
Another bright spot for the Badgers was the lack of mental errors in a
scrimmage that included over 100 plays. Trimble counted only a couple
of offsides penalties.
Snow’s next scrimmage will be Friday, April 15 at 12:45 p.m. in
Badger Stadium. The public is welcome to watch at no charge.
