DEFENSE
HAS THE UPPER HAND AGAIN IN SECOND BADGER SCRIMMAGE
Spring Game to be Held Saturday, April 23
EPHRAIM, Utah—April 18, 2005—For the second week
in a row Snow’s defense stood out in a scrimmage held at Badger
Stadium. The lone touchdown for the offense came during red zone drills
– where the offense must cover 20 yards in a certain number of plays.
“I thought
the defensive line controlled the line of scrimmage, the linebackers prevented
anything from getting around the edges and the defensive played very aggressive
Friday,” said Titan Trimble, Badger head coach.
A handful of defenders stood out Friday. Aramis Peoples, a cornerback,
intercepted a James Pritchard pass thrown under duress and nearly scored
a touchdown for the defense on the return. During red zone drills, cornerback
Tico Pringle intercepted a Pritchard fade pass intended for Travis Henderson.
“Tico made a heckuva play on that ball,” said Trimble. “Last
year I don’t think Tico makes that play but he’s worked hard
in off season strength and conditioning. He went up and stole that ball.”
Trimble was complimentary of the line backing corps once again, singling
out Mark Bricker for “containing the edge” – not allowing
any plays to get around his side of the field.
The offense did demonstrate improvement during third-down situations.
Quarterbacks completed several throws on third and long and third and
short situations. Alex Furness, a sophomore receiver, had two catches
for first down. Unfortunately, several Badgers dropped would be first
down receptions during the scrimmage as well. Joe Hawkins, a sophomore
receiver, caught a pass for the lone Badger touchdown during red zone
drills.
“Overall, we’re getting better at knowing the situation,”
said Trimble. “That doesn’t mean just knowing where the chains
are but knowing that sometimes taking a sack or throwing a ball away on
third down is okay. With our defense and kicking game this season, the
offense needs to know that there will be another chance to move the football.”
The team will prepare this week for the annual spring game to be held
Saturday, April 23 at 1:00 p.m. Admission is free. It will be an intrasquad
game with officials, a timer and game announcer.
